"Dual diagnosis" is a term used to describe a person who engages in substance abuse but also has an underlying mental condition, such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other psychiatric or psychological problems. For these people, treatment must address both problems.
Many people may not know that quite often substance abuse actually leads to a situation in which a dual diagnosis is made. A mental condition may not have been detected, or may not have been all that serious until the addiction or the drugs used exacerbated the symptoms or effects.
Calm Meadows is an LA substance abuse treatment center designed to treat substance abuse and dual diagnosis situations. The facility is designed to address both substance abuse and dual diagnosis situations. (For many, just the very name of the facility may invoke a sense of peace and serenity, allowing them to already start receiving benefits from substance abuse treatment.)
Patients are given physical examinations as well as psychiatric evaluations so that the underlying mental problem can be determined, or as mentioned earlier, in some cases diagnosed. From there, treatment programs are implemented that address both problems.
For some patients, this may mean adjusting or changing medications that are being taken for the mental condition, especially if it is discovered they are the ones causing the substance abuse. Other, less addictive, medications or treatments can be given, along with conventional addiction treatment, such as individual and group therapy, and other methods.
