Opium

Someone mentioned "Alice in Wonderland" which reminded me that one of the reasons Lewis Carroll's books were so vividly hallucinogenic was that he was an opium smoker himself. The caterpillar with his hookah is an obvious clue. I suppose drugs have a history of inspiring creative people in interesting ways.

This is a new piece of information to me but explains a lot about it. I have never thought of it in this way before but as I said it makes sense. I guess that goes to show you that this has been a problem for centuries and is nothing new just more people in the world to experience it.
