You'll not be addicted if you're following the right dosage. It surely depends on the amount of alcohol taken. In addition, doctor's prescription is needed before buying a medicine. It is important to know that many medicines do not mix well with alcohol.

Most cough syrups contain alcohol, as do some mouthwashes and a few other things. Read the ingredients on them--you'll be surprised.

I think that it's unlikely anyone would become addicted by alcohol in medicine.
Although if someone already was an alcoholic, I think it's quite possible that they may abuse the medicine for the alcohol content, if that was their only current source.

Abuse of medicines in this manner is rather common in fact and leads to all kinds of overdoses of the other drugs contained because of the need to consume large amounts of the cough syrup or whichever medicine you are abusing, just to get enough alcohol. That means a huge dose of say, Tylennol.
I too believe that it would be impossible to become an alcoholic on a normal dosing regime.

I believe there have been cases of abusing alcohol in things that you used to be able to find in grocery stores.
I think some kinds of vanilla extract used to have a significant alcohol content. And wasn't it possible to get "bitters" in some grocery stores at one time?
I realize some countries sell alcohol in grocery stores, but I mean that the sale of these products wasn't regulated as alcoholic beverages.

I just wondered what's the purpose of alcohol in cough syrup. What's the advantage of having it? any idea?

It acts to keep the other ingredients dissolved AND preserved, whereas water wouldn't do the job as well.

Ricardo, yes alcohol made up a part of certain none regulated things. Things like cooking wine have salt in them to try and reduce the abuse risk, but it does not always work.

I agree with you guys that there is a great deal of abuse in this manner. At our place there is a cough syrup called "Corex" easily available. Its pretty cheap and half a bottle of about 100 ml is enough for you to give a "high". I've seen many of my friends easily succumb to it but fortunately though they were mature enough to get out of it soon.
Yeah there lot possiblilty thst people get addicted to alcoholic medicine. Many of the cough syrups contain alcohol which when taken more(in terms of duration) then people get addicted to it.

Most cough syrup and "liquid gel capsules" contain alcohol excacly for the that purpose. To help you sleep better when you are very sick or can not sleep because of coughing or chest congestion. Best bet....Look for cough syrup that says "alcohol free". As well, mouth washes that don't contain alcohol are labeled as such. Alcohol in mouthwash killls germs that's why rubbing alcohol is an antiseptic. I've known people to relapse on such things as Nyquil which contains A LOT of alcohol! That's why its important to read labels and stay away from anything with any alcohol as it may act as a trigger.
