I wonder if many alcoholics enjoy the non-alcoholic versions of wine and beer?

I've drank those before in situations where I was driving, or just didn't want to consume alcohol and I liked them.

You were lucky you liked it , but most alcoholis will not like them since those drinks will not give them that pleasuer which alchol can give.

I wouldn't think so--the body is craving the alcohol itself, not the taste of the drink.

A glass of wine contains the same amount of alcohol as a bottle of beer or an ounce of hard liquor (rum, vodka, etc.)

Non-alcoholic wine and beer have something like half of one percent alcohol content, as opposed to 5% alcohol content for beer in Canada or the 3.5% for beer in the US. I don't remember off-hand the % for wine.

Person who is addicted to alsohol will never like non-alcoholic drinks whatsoever. I think that beer are better option for the person who is drinking heavily something like vodka, whiskey, etc.

My old landlady at university used to go out with an alcoholic and said that non alcoholic beer was just as effective at getting him started as normal beer.

Would anyone know why?

James,
To relate to your old landlady's boyfriend, there were a few times I wanted to be in the same atmosphere(same friends, bars and even tastes) but not consume.

I switched to non-alcoholic drinks during recovery and they helped me a lot in recovery. I think they can work better for the people who are recovering.

This is the grain which the fools can eat, but for which Lord intended a more divine means of consumption, Beer.:D

I find beer good because you can consume it in good quantities and still remain sober.

I agree that non-alcoholic drinks do not taste better then alcoholic drinks but they could be better and safer options as compared to alcoholic drinks.

Non-alcoholic drinks can be helpful if you want to quit from alcoholism but you should be very clear in your mind about your recovery and should be ready to face the problems associated with it.

I actually knew a person that was a recovery alcoholic and to let you know he did drink these. But they are not completely alcohol free in case you did not know this. I think that he had no problem with the way it tasted.

But beverages like beer and all contain too much less alcohol to have a considerable effect. Unless you have them in large quantities.

This stuff usually tastes like crap so I never get it. If I'm going to drink, I usually buy fairly expensive wine or Sake and not the cheap crap. I don't drink to get drunk, I drink because of the taste and some wines go very well with dinner.
