For all these days we have been talking about addiction but can someone actually define what is addiction.
Is the excess use of anything called addiction ?
or
Abusing things to certain point should be called addiction ?
I work more than 14 hours a day , so will it too be called as addiction to work.

I think we have things or grounds to consider before we called a certain action an Addiction.
In my own concept addiction is abusing something that is not good for your health or using prohibited things repeatedly or again and again.

This my first post and i've been doing an awful lot of thinking about this topis over many years, but have gotten some more incites over the last year. I've always thought of addiction as a love substitute, and ive been looking up some topics that seem to bear that out. Done some reading about Borderline Personality Disorder and how they seem to be damaged from infancy by not having affection bonds properly put into their hearts with security so they have a non"soothing/holding" feeling in their heart, so these children feel disconnected from the world cause they don't have warm emotions inside like other poeple who relate to other poeple and not use addictive things in thier lives, cause they already have the drug of love inside working for them. Another topis to read is RAD reactive affection disorder. Same thing as bpd persons without affection in their hearts. So without this natural bond formed into our hearts we seek a distraction that seems to give a psuedo feeling...something... something is better then nothing, thus addiction.
Another component to the reason for addiction is that we like to distract ourselfs from ourselfs and our lifes and the responsibilty's. So learning to take up a responsible life patter that you can feel good about in your heart of hearts can help distract yourself from your addiction.
you either choose distraction from yourself with addiction, or you can choose distraction from addiction with taking up responsibility of being You, or atleast the long journy of developing who you are responsibly. Invarible you'll need help on the way.
I've beat cigarette addiction and drug abuse, but i still got the last most annoying and confusing one to beat.

I think it can be tough to define addiction in certain areas.
For example, I'm sure there are many people considered to be alcoholic by others but not by themselves.
I think something like heroin addiction is maybe more "measurable" by the effects on the body, and some others like sex addiction causes behaviour issues that are less clearly defined as "addiction."
I'd be curious to hear what others think.
On a baseline level, addiction involves continuing certain negative behavior despite the dangerous consequences that continuining the behavior may cause.

I think addiction occurs when not only with excessive use but when that excessive use of anything becomes more important that anything else and it affects everyday living such as taking care of your children, going to work, minor chores that you once did that you no longer have interest in and so on.

Addiction is basically a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity. These activities are very numerous, from gambling to drinking etc. Addiction often cannot be handled by the one in cause it takes control of his life.

Defination of addiction...
"An unconditional love for something that you love to have, which might result to form a habit is addiction".

Addiction: Latin; addictus; to devote or give oneself up habitually to something
: A compulsive physiological need for a habit-forming drug.
: Compulsion to use a drug, loss of control over the amount used, and
continued use in spite of adverse consequences.*
I am a crackhead and as such do not receive the recognition of being an addict according to the powers that be....
ref: 3rd edition of the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMIII)
Cocaine Abuse requires a pattern of pathological use:
: Inability to reduce or stop use
: Intoxication throughout the day
: Episodes of cocaine overdose
: Impairment of social or occupational function.
So I ask you.....
Is addiction a constant need
An empty void of endless greed
A life long habit, unfulfilled
A continuous struggle all up hill
A pain inside like loneliness
With just one cure for emptiness
To always search and hunt that thing
For the happiness it will bring
Or could it be just one shot
That will always turn your insides hot
Does it lurk inside your mind
Waiting for that special time
Not constant use but now and then
Never really knowing where or when
A sneak attack when your guard is down
Do you just say yes when it’s around
Well think it out and let me know
Cause I’m not sure which way to go
Do I say yes and admit I’m caught
Or refuse because I think I’m not

What is Alcohol Addiction?
The disease called alcoholism and/or drug addiction is characterized by a craving for and a dependence on alcohol/drugs; an urge beyond the capability of the person to control. But there is so much more… it is a disease of the body, mind and spirit.
In simpler terms, alcoholism is when you lose control over the drug it controls you and you MUST drink to feel "normal".
It controls you.
You crave the alcohol, and you center your thoughts on getting the alcohol, using alcohol and getting more of it.
It's no longer a choice that you can overcome with will power. As the alcohol/drug takes control over a person’s life, they lose interest in life’s activities, personal relationships other than the ones with fellow users, and the person ignores any health, social or legal consequences.
Addiction is a disease that without treatment can be as deadly as cancer.
