Hi folks, I'm brand spanking new here, thought I'd tell my story.

I'm 40 years old. In 1988 or so I got my first taste of heroin and things spiralled out of control until by 1992 I had a $200/day habit and my life was falling apart. I checked into a methadone clinic and they put me on a rapid detox, which was painful, but I really wanted to get clean, and I did.

My sobriety lasted until 1997 when I relapsed for the first time, and quickly got sober again. A massive overdose scared the life out of me and I dropped the habit.

In 2002 I also relapsed, but got clean a few months later.

If you notice there is a 5-year cycle developing: 1992, 1997, 2002, ergo I was "due" to relapse in 2007.

Sure enough early this year I relapsed, my worst relapse yet. Since January of this year I must have put $15,000 or more in my greedy veins. Not just heroin this time, but also hydromorphone pills (Dilaudid) and oxycodone. All the while, I kept my horrible secret from my woman, the most beautiful woman I have ever met. She knew about my battle with heroin but somehow she just thought "that's in his past" and never considered the possibility of me relapsing. Shamefully, I exploited her innocence and virtually shot up drugs right under her nose without her realizing it for about 7 months.

Finally I came clean with her (this was just two weeks ago or so) and promised to check into a clinic and try out this new suboxone stuff. After a hard two day widthdrawal they put me on the suboxone and I have to say this stuff is really great. It took away the pains of my withdrawal and what really blows my mind is how it takes away cravings to use opiates.

Anyhow that's my story and I thought while I'm in this recovery stage maybe I could receive or give advice with others in similar situations.

P.S. My name is a misnomer--there really isn't such a thing as an "ex-junky". I'm still a junky, I'm just glad that I'm not using.

I have to say that even though you relapsed after every 5 year interval, it's very impressive that you managed to stay clean for that long! I just wanted to say good luck, and that anyone that can stay clean for 20 out of the past 25 or so years has something to be proud of, even if you can't see it now1 :)
