Has anyone tried hypnotherapy to beat an addiction? It seems to work with a reasonable success rate on the "legal" addictions such as smoking or gambling, but some people seem immune.

Here are a couple of sites on this:

Essentially it is using hypnotism to help you break bad habits, usually through negative associations, and to reinforce good habits.

I have also read at some places that self suggestions are also a good way to quit the habit you want to.

The basic philosophy behind it being that you tell something again and again to yourself untill your sub-conscious mind absorbs it and acts as if it is quite natural to you.

It is a it slow and you've got to have some patience but it definitely works.

Self suggestion does seem to work for some people, but whether it will work on something as strong as addiction is another issue.

It is often used for things like exams and slimming

I went to a seminar hypno-therapist to quit smoking. I didn't smoke for months and had no cravings. I worked with chain smokers and decided one day (maybe 6 months in) that I'd take a puff for old times sake. I was smoking a pack a day again within a week.

I also tried the hypnosis tapes to quit smoking. Not one iota of help.

I tried self hypnosis. No help.

I tried chanting style meditation. No help.

I am not slamming any of the activities and I've benefitted greatly in other regards from meditation and hypnosis. What I've concluded is that an in-person professional hypno therapist can be an immense help. The rest is up to you. The other techniques are generally not emotionally challenging enough to be a real benefit with smoking.
