At our place the legal drinking age has been fixed at 25 but speaking honestly even I wasn't aware of it when I started at 15. And I seriously dont think that the law fixing the age limit has had an effect.

Thats the problem with most of the people that they are unaware of the laws of their countries. I bet you if you take a survey almost 80 percent of the common people say that they are unaware of drinking laws of their countries.

Different laws at different places. I think it should be same at every where. I know its sounds strange. but dont you think at one place drinking age is 5 whereas at another place it is 25. You yourself see the difference. At my place it is 18 years.

It cant be same everywhere because of the reason of different notions, perceptions, different attitudes towards alcohol at different places and you cannot apply a common solution to all kind of problems. Every problem has its own tailor-made specific solution.

i don`t think it is allowed, I guess the authorities just did not find out about any case of juvenille drinking, they are not allowed to drink, there sure is a law for that one. I am totally against juvenille drinking, they are not even supposed to be let to taste any kind of drink that contains alcohol.

Anywhere you go, even if laws are in affect, it will not stop underage drinking. Parents need to be more proactive and teach their children why it is not good for them and how to deal with peer pressure if the situation ever arises.

Do I think it is ok for a parent to allow their children to drink. Well that is hard to say, because if a child is going to drink then I would much rather know about and have them do it in my presence. But for the sake of just buying it for them and letting them drink whenever they want then I do not think it is right.

The law can be an ass and often fails to reflect what is really going on in the 'real' world.

The minimum age of alcohol normally relates to the age at which you purchase it - not actually drink. From what I recall there is a law stating that you're not supposed to give alcoholic drinks to children below a certain age but who is going to check up.

You are right, you are not allowed to sell alcohol in this country (the uk) to under 18's, but there is no law on them drinking it. I think children above the age of five area llowed to drink alcohol in their home, or in a pub with a meal. In France, they have far few problems with binge drinking, because alcohol is not taboo. Children are encouraged to drink watered down wine with their meals, and I think this responsible attitude carries through into their adolescence.

In the US (or at least in my state) the drinking age is 21. They lowered it to 18 for a while, but drunk driving deaths skyrocketed. It is also illegal for adults to give children alcohol.

I think the bigger problem is that it is very unpopular for adults to try to send the message to kids that it is very easy to live life only having an occasional beer or drink with dinner out (or easy to live life without drinking alcohol at all).

In some circles, the adult who says that kind of thing is look at like s/he has two heads.

I don't think France has the answer, though, because children's brains are forming, and no matter how someone tries to put a spin on it, alcohol can be damaging to brains. Alcohol consumption (in fairly modest amounts) has now been connected to breast cancer, and nobody knows what else it could be connected to in terms of health problems. There's a lot of things they do in France that I wouldn't see adopted in the US - and giving alcohol to children is one of them.

5? oh man that would create a world of drunk people? in our country the age is 18 years old. Below you get penalized but that rarely happens i could even see people drink at the age of 12 15 and don't get caught.

Recently I have seen on tv a report about a 5 year old boy who went in coma from drinking just 300 ml of whisky, the parrents have not been arround and the child just drunk the stuff, he is recovering but he could die if his parrents would have not found him on time. Now his parrents are blamed of not supervising their young minor .
