The most effective way for me is eating candies or chewing gums. It's a good alternative if you wanted to quit smoking.

How much of this do you do? You have your teeth to think about also.

What's the use of toothbrush and toothpaste? There's nothing wrong of eating candies as long as you drink plenty of water and brush your teeth.

We've recently started a program at work for people who decided to stop smoking due to the new anti-smoking law in OH. Our medical director prescribed Chantix by Pfizer and we've had some really good results. We also required the use of one of the behavioral health support systems such as the 1-800-QUIT-NOW phone supports in order to be eligible for the second round of prescripitons. I've had 3-pack-a-day smokers walk away from their habit without cravings (self reported). And no, I don't work for Pfizer.

The downside of using candies or other food is the potential weight-gain. I know some people have had success with hypnotism or acupuncture. My ex just quit one day--he finished a pack of cigarettes in May 1979 and never smoked again.

My hubby decided to quit.........
first he went to swisher sweet cigars......... after that got to be too much he decided to let his doctor know.. she rxd a very low dose panic attack tranq.
he used maybe 1/2 a vial and 1 Cq PATCH.
He sucked on low carb sucking candies and ate oranges. Bag after bag... while most gain weight, we took up hiking, bowling and eating more fruits.
It worked. hes been cigarette free 3 years!
he had a 12 pound weight gain whe we werent hiking.

he also took up SCUBA.. you cant smoke when you SCUBA........
oh and I cooked awful. Nothing that would trigger a good meal that woudl need a good cigarette or cigar afterwards.........

I went from 3 packs a day, to half a pack, to nothing, without nicotine replacements, without counselling. I think I was just at the right time in my life. I had little to no stress, I had a job and had been accepted to uni, I was in love with a none smoker-everything was just perfect for me at that time. Another time previously I had tried and failed; I think that everyone does better under the right conditions, replacements or not.

When my ex-husband quit, he just decided he was done. He finished the pack of cigarettes he had at the time (this was in 1979) and never smoked again. He passed away of primary sclerosing cholangitis this January just past, which was unrelated to his earlier habits. But still, he was one of those rare people who could just stop.

I have quit smoking few months back and my girlfriend helped me. She is from India and asked me to try yoga to quit smoking and the result was that I quit smoking in just two months without taking any drugs!!

My grandfather had been a heavy smoker for forty years and when he decided to quit he kept one cigarette in a packet in his bedside draw. With the help of nicotine patches (not very alternative) he kept off for almost twenty years.

He died from the effects of his earlier smoking.

Yoga and meditation can help you to stabilize your mind and that in return will help you to control your feelings, the next time you see a cigarette.
