What would you guys classify as someone who is 'addicted' to alcohol. Do they have to be a consistent binge drinker so just someone who has to take 3-4 drinks per day. Do they have to get completely wasted every day to be considered an addict?

I would rather say that a person in a habit of drinking daily should be classified as addicted because in those cases if he doesnt gets it for a single day he gets irritated and starts behaving crazy.

Well I would call a person addict if he satisfy two conditions. First is that he is drinking daily and second is that he is increasing the quantity at regular interval like after every 2 days there is increase of one more beer can. If a person satisfy these two conditon then I would call him addicted.

I would classify you an alcholic if you got up each and every morning and the first thing you did was start drinking. Or if you have to go out everynight and drink. I am not sure that if you drink daily, unless excessively that you would really be called one.

Does the body of an alcoholic starts "craving" if he is not getting any just as in case of other drugs or is it just a mental thing which leads him to drink more and more?

Any one that drinks alcholic drinks on a regular basic is a alcholic . MOst people will not agree with this but are they the people that drink on a regular basic .

I do not drink and do not agree with that general term of alcoholic. I think there are many other factors that you have to look at. The amount they are drinking, the time of day they start drinking, is there an increase in the amount being drank.

I don't agree. I don't drink very often but I know people who have like 1 drink a day on a regular basis. I would not consider them addicting by any standards. They don't really crave it, its just become more of a ritual or habit every day to take a drink at a certain time.

I would call a person addicted if he is at such a stage that he wants alcohol at any costs and would stop at nothing from getting it. Its kind of a mania if you look from that particular person's point of view. He thinks it is the life line for him and he cannot survive without it.

I think if you feel you have to drink to have fun, then you are an alcoholic. If you have to drink every night, you are an alcoholic. If you do drink socially, and perhaps even regularly, but don't HAVE to drink - so, for example, you know you have to get up early tomorrow morning so you decide to stay on soft drinks that night, then you're not an alcoholic.

I drink when I go to the pub with my friends, but if they said 'no, lets go bowling this week instead', I wouldn't be annoyed that the bowling alley don't serve beer - I'd be happy to go.

I think that's the difference between an alcoholic and a social drinker.

I personally believe that anyone that drinks and cant say no to the next one is an alcoholic. They don't have to be the laying in the gutter lost all their money and life to be addicted.

I would call a person addicted when he will start behaving abnormal when he didn't get his daily addiction. Drinking daily could not be the criteria to call a person an addict.

I would call you aloholic when your body will start craving for alcohol and start showing the symptoms of this craving. I don't think you are alcoholic if you drink daily just one peg before going to bed.

An alcoholic can be "labeled" as an alcoholic in case he cannot go thorugh a whole day without feeling the need to drink, If he passes one day and he did not get his usual amount of alcohol in his blood stream, he will become irritated and sometimes violent.

I believe that saubryn said it best. I am a very classically addicted alcoholic. Meaning, I've been drinking heavily for many years. I can't even imagine my life without drinking. It is so much a part of me. I'm on break at work right now and I'm sitting here suffering from alcohol poisoning from a party that occurred two weeks ago. It's not that I haven't drank daily since. It's just that I've been trying to take it easy for a while. Still, I'm in pain. I can feel my kidneys and liver hurting. Man, I can't wait until I get home so that I can have a couple of drinks. Isn't it wonderful that there are people who don't understand? Those are the extremely lucky people who can enjoy themselves with alcohol on occasion.

I can't rationalize the thing even if you are not wasted daily but still consume alcohol? alcohol for me is poison so i think you are addicted even if you are not wasted daily.

This is the most common thing that I hear at meetings from newcomers. And the most common response is: "Stick around and you'll be able to decide for yourself."

There is a big difference between drink some alcohol and being an addict.
For a lot of people is drinking some kind of relaxing but sometimes people drink to much.
I think people are addict to alcohol when you can't stop drinking anymore.
Drinking on strange moments en can't say no to another drink.
But what are the most reasons people get a alcohol addiction?

Alcoholism is a self diagnosis. The easiest way to decide if you are an alcoholic is to read the book Alcoholics Anonymous (http://www.aa.org/bigbookonline/en_tableofcnt.cfm). The link will allow you to read it for free.

A person does not have to drink to extreme excess on a daily basis to be an alcoholic. The things to consider when looking into the situation are what happens when a person drinks? Can they have a couple and walk away? How is the behavior during the time they are drinking? Are they the same person with their values and morals intact when they have had a few? Doe the person adjust their life according to put drinking alchohol at the top of their priorioties? Just a few things to think about! M
