Almost all of my friends are Buddhist, they smoke and drink alcohol just like me. But I haven't seen a monk smoking.

Are they supposed to smoke or drink?

This is one of the rules of Buddhism, and applies to lay people as well as clergy.

--to abstain from substances which cause intoxication and heedlessness.

There are four other precepts which Buddhists are supposed to follow, and involve abstaining from taking life of beings (any living creature), avoid taking things not given to you, avoid sensual misconduct (not just sex, but overindulging in any sensual activity like overeating, etc.), and avoid false speech (slander, lying, gossip).

i really like that specific term 'sexual misconduct'. not saying that sex is bad... but to have it as an expression of love..and not using someone. .. or using yourself for sex.

I like it, too. I may have to investigate Buddhism more deeply. I doubt I will ever become vegetarian, but I can certainly appreciate these rules. They make a lot of sense to me.

Well Buddhism had always appealed me quite a bit but never got a chance to exactly look into it. Although I have a perception that in their belief there is a strong sense of discipline. And that they are very rigid in their thoughts in a very conventional sense of way.

I might be wrong so please correct me if you find anything contrary to it.

I have been with some monks and I have seen a monk chewing tobacco but i would not say that all of them do it . Also the aim of buddha is to help people find peace and happiness and we have to do it buddha has not put any hard rules he only tells us what we should do to reach there .

Thats not a question. Smoking and drinking are forbidden in every religion but we drink and smoke. It depends upon ones opinion whether he want to get addicted or not.

Well Smoking and drinking are forbidden in Buddhism or any other religion but people who follow this religion are not follow all way of their religion. I know few of my friends who follow Buddhism and they take drinks daily.

Why not? Drinking and smoking depends upon ones own thought. He has full control over it and he is free to smoke or drink. Religion does not form a barrier.
