I've seen first hand that smoking weed can aleviate pain. If it's done in moderation, why shouldnt people be allowed to smoke it in their own homes if it brings them relief?

I too have seen it in people with chronic pain like fibromyalgia help them allot. I don't see why they shouldn't be able to use it. However I do not want my teenagers able to run into a store and buy any just for fun

Because like all smoking, doing it on a consistent basis has negative medical effects. It will slowly deteriorate your lungs over time as has been proven. Also its easy to say "let people control it" but most people cannot control it once they start.

I live with man rapidly approaching his sixties. He is a mechanic, and so not only works with his hands, but is often out in the cold. He suffers from arthritus, and no pain relief or preventative pills he takes ease the pain. However, smoking weed does. Why shouldn't he be allowed to do his job free from agonising pain? It is a natural substance afterall.

Because it can be addictive. Ok suppose that they are allowed to do it, then every time they feel the slightest bit uncomfortable they use it as an excuse to smoke, then it because a habit and addiction just as other prescription drugs are.
