I found some pills in my sons jeans pocket. I called the pharmacy and told them the symbol and the number on the pills. and was told they were Hydrocodone. When I asked him about them he said they were given to him for pain from a friend. I don't know if I should be concerned or what?

I'd pay more attention to him and his "friends". Its very well that your son could be telling the truth. Check his composure when you ask him. If he tightens up, then he's probably lying. If he says it matter-of-fact, there is a greater of him telling the truth. Just tell him to stay off of these things.

I'd be concerned because people generally are told never to take prescription medications that were not prescribed specifically for their condition.

Its pretty reason for a kid to know if he's got minor pain (say, from sports) OTC counter pain-killers can be used in the right dose. If they don't work then the kid needs to see a doctor. That's how to deal with pain. Teenagers usually know, in their heart, that's the only way to deal with pain. I suppose if he isn't covered by health insurance his story may be a little more believable.

The way I see it, either he's taking prescription drugs for a legitimate pain (which means he's not handling his medical condition correctly), or else he's using the pills for something else. I'd be concerned.

If your son is taking the medicine without the medical prescription then he might be taking them for the purpose of addiction. You can talk straightly to him

You have to know if you son is lying? because you are with him for all of his life so observe everything and then try to see if you could pick somethings up.

Yes you need to be very concerned. Please get your son into some sort of prevention program. If nothing else he will learn the dangers of addiction.
