what are the usual treatments for people that inflict self-harm?

i have heard of therapy, and self-relaxation techniques..but hypnosis as well?

I think it's important to find a therapist who understands this behavior. But in the situation of my friend, a group theraphy is the best. Now she's no longer ashamed of telling all her feelings and emotions.

I used to know a woman who was caught in this and for her, a big part of the healing was talking to someone else who had been through the same childhood trauma that set her off. I guess different things will work for different people. Ultimately, they have to find out what the root cause is.

what do you think about medication as a treatment?

I'm not a fan of medication as a first choice for this, unless the underlying cause is depression or other brain chemical imbalance. Medicating doesn't always treat the real cause, just masks the symptoms, but if it were to get to the underlying reason (like depression) then it could be a very good tool.

There are now new thoughts of school on self harming. People who are hospitalised for treatment depending whether they are at a more progressive hospital will no longer have their cutting tools removed from them, or may be provided sterile ones.

It has finally been acknowledged that for those who do self harm it is a stress relief, and removing that relief can in itself be harmful. It is far better to control the use of cutting and in doing so make it safe. Whilst doing that they being to examine the underlying issues that lead to the self harm.

I am struggling to find references for this, but it was published some time last summer.

I have tried to find it. All I know is that originally I read this on the BBC news website, and I followed the references to the original publication. But I went back to the BBC and could not find that first article, so I am struggling to find the publication too

There is a mental health forum I belong to with a forum just for those who suffer from self harm. If you Google Psych Central, you should be able to find the main forum. There's been a lot of support and information shared in the Self Injury forum.

All these techniques would be really effective. Hypnotism, meditation, yoga, exercise, pranayam. Lets try all of them.

Its just hypnotism that can create some benefit for the patient. It not an addiction. Its a physiological disease.

im not quite convinced that self injury can be cured, i was in and out of treatment facilities a few years ago, and i still think about doing it all the time. i haven't actually committed to the act for a while tho, so i suppose that all the counciling did have some benefit
