What would happen if employers fired workers with cancer or heart disease . We have to look at addiction as a illness also . Studies have found that helping employees to recover is more cost-effective than termination .

Why is it the employers responsibility and not the responsibilty of the person who became addicted to begin with? Just want to know. They are in the business of conducting business and not to become ones babysitter.

I agree that in some cases, the employer should try and help, but it shouldn't be forced by anybody.

In a sense of deciding whether addiction is an illness or not, i've heard it can be discretionary, depending on the doctor you speak to them about it. Sometimes you bring the addictions on yourself, othertimes you don't, and thats a fine line to cross, especially for employers. After all, people seem to want to sue them for everything under the sun lately.
