No big newsflash there! Yes, drugs will change you, especially opiates.
Human emotions which seem to be so closely related to endorphins, dopamine, and other natural chemicals that your brain uses. People tell the addict "it's all in your head", well that may be literally true, but there are chemical causes behind the way they feel. It's not magic, it's science.
It's easy to understand this process: recognize that your body is always seeking homeostasis, a state of balance. When you do opiates frequently, your body detects that there is an imbalance, because its opiate receptor sites are being overstimulated, so it reacts by first cutting back on natural endorphin production, and then when that fails, it starts to make more opiate receptor sites.
Then when the supply of extra chemicals is cut off, an extreme deficiency of receptor stimulation occurs, causing depression, aches, goosebumps, shakes, cravings, which we call "withdrawal".
But the good news is this: that if you get off the dope (whether by cold-turkey or by a reduction detox or however you can manage it) your body will try to restore balance again, by making receptors go dormant. Therefore it is possible to 'feel normal' even after having been an addict, but it takes some time. What happens during that time is that receptor sites shut down so that your own natural endorphins can once again have a measurable impact on your emotions.
However these dormant receptors are not dead forever, they are ever waiting to spring back to life. All it takes to wake them up is a temporary excess of opiates to exist in the bloodstream. That's why it's so very important, perhaps moreso than with other kind of drug addicts, to remain 100% clean of opiates at all times. You can kick dope and go for years and years being clean, then undo all that hard work in a weekend.
