People often blame Barbie dolls and fashion magazines for the fact that young girls want to be thin. People often say that these images of girls/women are what cause the dissatisfaction with girls'/women's own bodies.
I have a theory:
I believe that there is a chance many heterosexual girls/women will never find what they see in the mirror at all attractive because they are, in fact, attracted to the male build (which, when ideal, is straight and flat). Girls and women who happen to be straight and flat may be happier, but any girl/woman who has any curves will find her own body repulsive (again, simply because she is heterosexual and finds the male build attractive).
Girls/women who based their self-esteem on how they are seen by men may like their feminine curves better, but girls/women who are more interested in liking what they see in the mirror for themselves (rather than for men) would have more of a problem.
The irony is that it is generally seen as healthier when women want to look their nicest just for themselves.
