View Full Version : When did "X" first become popular
I know X was popular in the 1990's, but how long was it around? Did it originate in the 1970's?

Ok, I have been around the block a few times but I haven't heard of X. This could be because its an American name and maybe in the UK we call it something different, so can you maybe tell me something about the chemical, or the drug name?

It's called "Ecstasy", "Extasy" or X for short.
MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) is its chemical composition. Apparently, it was invented in 1912, patented in 1914, and became popular in the 1980's as a party drug, and has been growing in popularity ever since.

I haven't been in the club circuit, but I think I probably first heard of it about ten years ago.
Do you know where it began to show up in the 80s?

Thank you! I know what you call X, as E. I was a little young to have anything to do with it in the 70's and have in fact never touched it, but I started hearing about it in the early 90's.

According to Wikipedia, the drug started out being popular with the yuppie crowd in Dallas, Tx. Before that, it was used for psychotherapy. The history of it at Wikipedia is very interesting.

How interesting that you would use as therapy something that in itself makes you see things. How that would help a person who was already having issues, I can only imagine.

I know its been around the club and rave scene in Europe since the late 80's. The two biggest products of E are Holland and Poland at the moment.

One of the main reasons behind the popularity is that it is very cheap to produce and there for it can be purchased very cheaply from dealers by consumers. In Holland a XTC pill costs around 2 dollars.
I just wanted to note there is a cool book called Can't Find My Way Home that has a chapter on the subject of X that is quite enlightening.

I was unaware that XTC made a person see things. I thought it just altered their perception.

You say that Ecstasy was invented in 1912... do you know what it's intended use was??
I find it so interesting that a drug created almost a century ago has made it's way into the mainstream as a designer drug.. I've only used it probably 10 times, and then after reading this in depth article on the long term effects that it can have on the brain I stopped using it altogether..

Ecstacy has been patented? Really? By who. And are they going to sue all the other people who are making it now? With rwgards to it being used in therepy, it doesn't make you see things, its not hallucinagenic, its just a mood enhancer, so I suppose it could make people open up, but it doesn't sound very ethical. Then again the CIA used to use LSD as 'truth syrum' so anything's possible.

I think X got more and more popular during the Mid 90's. Thats when I first saw stuff about it on the papers and news. It started gaining steam in the 80's but it was during the 90's that widespread use in clubs became more common.

I think that the club scene just became more popular towards the end of the 80s, with the rise of superclubs like the Hacienda, and pills became more popular as a consequence of this. People are a lot more interested in dance music and djs nowadays than they used to be.
