If you're someone who found yourself addicted to drugs, alcohol, or both, is there something that you think today's parents of young kids should know that may help them recognize a kid who is at high risk of being a user?

I know the world if full of information from professionals, but sometimes the people who have the best information are the people who know what made them start using or what would have prevented them from becoming addicted.

Sometimes when people can help others learn from our bad experiences at least something positive comes out of it.

I think the best way would be to be totally open and honest with your kids and encourage them to ask questions and learn about the perils. I think the worse thing a parent can do is take a 'they're bad' stance without backing it up with facts.

Share your experience with people. Even if you only get through to one person that it is worth it. Think about it, if everyone in the world who has suffered touched the life in a way to get another addict to stop and think and want to get help then that would be a lot of help out there and we might not see so many addicts.
