Can addictions be inherited?

I was just wondering if addictions can be inherited or if they are purely caused by environment?

I'm sure we're all aware of cases where children have followed their parents leads and become addicted to something.

Was this a result of being in a situation with an addict or is it something within their genes?

I do not believe there is a gene that makes us become an addict. However there are things within us that can trigger addictions such as mental or emotional instibilities, also the life we are exposed to can have negative effects on us, and chemical imbalances within the body can cause us to do things we would not normally do.
