I'm aware that binge eating hasn't yet been declared a psychiatric disorder but I think it will be someday soon. Having said that, I might have a slight case of binge eating when it comes to eating sweets. Sometimes I really crave sweets even though I know they aren't good for me.

Many people begin to crave sweets for a host of medical reasons.
One it could be the begining of menses, it could be undiagnosed MODY
( diabetes), it could be hypoglycemia( low blood sugar) it could be mood swings, it could be your body just needs it.
Binge eating, uncontrollable eating, is also a form of self calming and self medicating. Since foods trigger brain chemical releases, many foods we binge on have a chmical stimlus. If you crave or binge on chcolate, your brain is releasing " happy" chemicals after eating.
IN self calming we are never sure if its becuas eof teh action of eating or the redirection that causes us to calm down.
Binging is also a way for our bodies to signa a need for an unknown or needed element.
What makes it go haywaire has also been shown to be an allergic reaction. If wecrave say bologna, apples or other foods consitantly and we eat it, only to crave it more later. it ahs been shown in many biochem studies to actually be an allergic reaction, especially if we have som sort of physical reaction to it. MAnybinge on foods we are allergic to and develop water pockets, swollen feet, typical allergic reactions etc.
i would have a hard time believing that binge eating is recognized as a psychiatric disorder..
maybe as a symptom of a disorder.. or a symptom of depression, bulimia, or whatever..

I have read some discussions about calling it a psychiatric disorder but it would seem more like a symptom of depression or something to me too.
I've also read that craving certain foods can be due to an allergy to that food. That seems so strange to me, Jimmy.

I would agree that it seems more of a symptom than a condition in it's own right. Many people experience this, even though they perfectly healthy emotionally. For some it is just a part of a ritual; certain sporting events or holidays.

Binge eating for me is usually due to emotionally issues, yes. Sometimes a holiday or special day, sometimes just out of boredom, but I can't see anyone in the medical community "winning" a fight to get it called a psychiatric disorder.

I dont think it is psychiatric disorder. It is something you like it and you are doing it. Some peoplr like eating like me and yet they are very fit but that doesn't mean that I am having psychiatric problem.

I agree that the cause of binge eating is generally because you are experiencing emotional difficulties. I do have to say though that binge eating can also come from not getting enough to eat. If you are dieting and you crave something have it in moderation, or you may end up binging on this item.

I agree , binge eating is very unhealty and many of us do it , i think everyone that eats with no reason after all, should get help from a psichiatrist or family doctor first.
