I am prescribed 20mg of Oxycondone 3 x a day for back soreness, and when and if I may run out I under go withdrawal symptoms. I know the potential for dependancy to this drug because I am the first to admit I depend on them.

The odd time I may take 1 or 2 more then prescribed, not for the euphoria just because I may need a boost at work or such.

What I need to know is, how long do the withdrawal symptoms last? And what are some of the symptoms you have been through, trying to get off them?

I feel I can comtrol my intake but my family are after me to get off them all together because they think the drug is fooling me into believing my back actually hurts.

I feel my pain iis real. Are they right? How hard is it to get off them with out rehab etc. ?

Going cold turkey I hear is dangerous, is that true?

Thank you for any help you may have

Oxycodone withdrawal can be pretty tuff, but not life threatening. Basically what happens is when you first start taking oxycodone it is a foreign substance in your body. The longer you use the more your body adapts to it, and this is when you start to build a bigger tolerance and have to have more of the drug to have the same affect. After you use for so long, it's not the high that you go after, it's the feeling of feeling "normal". I agree with your family, you need to stop the drug all together. If you have an addiction, there is no middle ground and you will never be able to control your use. There are better, non addictive, medications out there that could help with your pain. An addictive mind will make you believe your pain is worse than it really is. You stop using and you'll have 5-7 days of feeling like you have the flu. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids and take a multi vitamin and a B1 vitamin and it will make the withdrawal process a lot easier on you. Just hang in there and attend some self help meetings things always get better the longer you stay sober.

I wish I had never have started the narcotic pain management plan. I now take oxycontin just to feel normal. My monthly script of 60 -20 mg oxycodones only a week. I wish I could stop this vicuos cycle but it is hard not to keep picking up my meds when they are ready. I cannot even function without them. The last time I went cold turkey I couldn,t eat or sleep for the first week. It took about 3 weeks before I was able to start feeling normal. There is no methodone clinics in my area. There is a suboxcone clinic but without insurance, the cost makes it impossible for me. I would like to hear from anyone who has beat the addiction.
