An old friend of mine really enjoys his marijuana, but he can't smoke it any more. Smoke of any kind really bothers his lungs, so he makes marijuana butter out of it and uses it in cooking--sauces and cookies and such. I suppose it works and I guess it gives the same effects, but it amused me he would find this method instead of giving it up.

Addicted people try to find newer way of getting more and more out of any drug, even if they leave smoking they will start chewing it or using it any diffrent way, but its very hard that they might leave it

There are many methods of using hash-in fact I once worked in a shop that sold a hash cookbook, so I know of a few methods. You can even make hot cocoa with it, bake cakes and cookies. I don't want to talk too much as I don't wish to appear to condone the habit.

I wonder if the hash that was baked into brownies would be less harmful overall than if it's smoked?
I'd expect that to be the case. I recently heard that even smoke from blown-out candles can be excessive, particularly scented ones.

I think that weed should not really be considered a drug. People who are drinking lots of booze every day are off much worse then those smoking the holy herb.

Jim, I agree with you on many levels. Ricardo, yes I think that it is a safer way to consume it, for no other reason than the exposure tends to be slower and more controlled. It's coming through your stomach, not your lungs-which give a far faster kick to anything.
There is also the fact that hash smoke is hotter than tobacco smoke, and can even more severely burn away the cilia that line the lungs. Then you end up with the mucous gathering the in lungs, the so called smokers cough which really is just the tip of the iceberg.
