View Full Version : Students and Alcoholism

In the UK there is a fairly large problem with students misusing alcohol. The university I attended in particular had the highest level of graduate alcoholism in the country. It also had the highest level of student marriage, and student divorce, leading us to often wonder which came first......

But I wonder if this is just a side effect of the student lifestyle. You are away from home for the first time and living under your own control, and have more access to booze. Alternatively is it a stress thing?

Care to share your thoughts?

It's not just university students, although that IS the time that many people cut loose and go crazy, but there is an increasing problem among younger kids. One of my daughter's friends has started drinking (both her parents are alcoholics and buy her the beer--I want to beat them senseless) and she's only 15.

So that begs the question; how does this 15 year old get hold of the booze? Does she have older friends who supply her? Or does she look WAY older?

Reread my post, Britjojo. Her parents supply her. This is one of the main reasons I want to smack them upside the head with a broom handle.

Crap, I missed that completely. I have no problem with drinking in the home, I really don't. We drank in the home from an early age and on the whole I think that I benefited from the education that this provided me. But to supply regularly to the point that the person is getting drunk or becoming dependant, is inexcusable.

Britjojo you might have drunk at home so you take that easy , but many people are not allowed to do that , so when they get freedom they misuse it

The same thing in my place. If you happened to drop by in a bars or clubs, almost all customers are students. Instead of studying or doing homeworks, they are busy drinking alcohol. I noticed the bars securities will only check the ID and they are allowed to enter the bar. Hope the goverment will do somthing in this issues.

And that's why many parents allow their kids to drink in the home. When they do get out on their own, they have some experience with social drinking and they may be less likely to overdo it, because it wasn't "forbidden" at home. It's a theory.

I think there's quite a gap between allowing you children to experiment with the occasional drink at home in an appropriate setting (wine with dinner, for example) and buying a 12 pack of beer for your 15 yr old and encouraging her to drink with you when you're both getting so drunk you don't know what you're doing. Some parents need a good kick.

That theory worked very well in our house. I drank sensibly and never much overdid it when I came of age. My sister, who hated the taste of alcohol when growing up, developed a sudden taste for it when she was of age, and it really got her in trouble.

I am never in favour of allowing children to experiment with drinks like alcohol. I do not know about others but I have decided that I wont allow my kids to drink before 20 at least.

Nice Roxy that you are very concerned about your kids!!! I am also not in favour of introducing alcohol before 18 years of age.

One of our friends told me that the first time he got drunk at a friend's party and went home, his dad told him that from now on whenever you want to drink, you just need to tell me. We guys will sit together and have some of it which would prevent you from drinking outside and getting rash.

It was quite sensible in my opinion. What do you guys say?
