Marijuana abuse in Alberta Canada is somewhat widespread. A recent study was done concerning the use of marijuana and 22% of the adults 18 years of age and over reported to have smoked marijuana more than 6 times in the year prior to being interviewed for the study. Marijuana is not only readily available in Alberta but is also considered socially acceptable.

Marijuana addiction is much more common than the addiction to tobacco. When polled, 72% supported the banning of cigarettes in the work place. An even larger number of 86% supported the banning of cigarette ads in public view. Of all illicit drug use, Cannabis (marijuana) appears to be the most commonly abused. The rate of lifetime marijuana use is quite a bit higher than the national rate of all Canadians over the age of 15 years old. Cannabis appears to be the drug of choice in Alberta Canada.

Gambling is also abused in Alberta Canada. An overwhelming 66% of the adults 18 years of age and older admitted to having what the study defined as a mild gambling addiction. For many people gambling and drinking go hand and hand and because of this, the chances of forming a gambling addiction and alcohol dependency are tripled. Internet gambling is another choice for many in Alberta, online gambling is abused by many individuals as it is anywhere else in the world.

Alcohol dependency is also a problem in Alberta. 82% of Albertan’s aged 21 and over reported to indulge in alcohol use. Alcohol use ranged from rare social drinkers to severe alcohol addiction. Alcohol is not only legal at 18, but it is more advertised than fast food. Not only can this be a problem for those dealing with alcohol dependency but would make alcohol much more appealing to young people. In Alberta, many individuals make their own beer and wine but their alcohol abuse stays relatively low. Currently, alcohol use in Alberta fluctuates but seems to be decreasing compared to years past. Many of the individuals who drink also reported they had never used illicit drugs in their lifetime.

Cocaine and crack cocaine use in Alberta is low but it does exist along with speed, methamphetamine, hallucinogens, steroids, heroin and solvent abuse. Drug abuse treatment centers are available for those in need.

Most of the people who live in Alberta view drug abuse and alcohol abuse as a very important and serious issue. Most of them support drug policy programs and government actions when it comes to reducing the use of illegal drugs and alcoholism. There is strong support in the community when it comes to needle exchange programs, methadone maintenance programs, and drug treatment courts.
