In 2009 Methamphetamine was a big concern in Nebraska for their law enforcement. With Interstate 80 providing easy west to east access across the state, Nebraska continues to be a trans-shipment (easily transported), state for Mexican methamphetamine.
Nebraska has over 165 meat packing and poultry plants and 55,000 farms statewide. The number of Hispanic workers, both legal and illegal, has nearly tripled in the last 10 years. The population has grown so rapidly and has allowed members of drug trafficking organizations with ties to Mexico to easily blend into the community without attention brought on them. Because Interstate 80 crosses Nebraska from east to west, this serves as a drug smuggling route for the drug trafficking organizations.>/p>
Hydrocodone, codeine based cough syrups and OxyContin are a problem in Nebraska. These are obtained in several ways including going to several doctors for prescriptions, and forged prescriptions. Traditional drugs are much more heavily abused than steroids, hallucinogens, depressants and stimulants in Nebraska.
Drugs such as PCP and LSD are rarely found in Nebraska.
Marijuana is available in Nebraska throughout the major cities. Some of the marijuana comes from Mexico. The methods of bringing marijuana into Nebraska are Greyhound buses, Amtrak and many forms of vehicles via the U.S. highway system.
A prime example of marijuana being a problem and readily available is an article that I found at foxnews.com. This article was written on December 13th 2007. The headline read, “Nebraska Drug Dog Sniffs Out $3M Worth of Pot”. The authorities seized nearly a ton of marijuana from a man camping along Interstate 80 in west Omaha. The sheriff’s office said “a drug dog sniffed out 90 packages of marijuana some wrapped as Christmas gifts - which together weighed 1,940 pounds. The estimated street value was more than $3 million.
A form of methamphetamine that is preferred in Omaha and easily found is Crystal or “Ice”. This is a man-made synthetic stimulant that is extremely addictive. It looks like whitish-blue rocks or small pieces of glass of different size. This drug is sometimes smoked in glass pipes or can be injected. Some of the methamphetamine is brought in from Hispanic controlled trafficking organizations.
Heroin can be found in small amounts in Omaha Nebraska and is for the most part, received from Mexican sources. This drug is not a drug of choice in Nebraska.
Cocaine is found in limited quantities in the Omaha Metropolitan areas. This is due to the preference of the consumer being methamphetamine. The cocaine distributors in Omaha are for the most part, of Hispanic origin and have been known to trade with African-American groups who then convert the cocaine into crack cocaine.
