In 2008 reports showed that the drug of concern in the state of Oklahoma was crystal methamphetamine. Another drug that’s a problem in the urban areas of the state is crack cocaine. Oklahoma also serves as a trans-shipment spot for drugs that are being transported to the eastern United State via Interstates 40 and 44.

Cocaine is quite easily found throughout Oklahoma. This drug is transported from Texas and Mexico by way of commercial airlines and motor vehicles. Mexican traffickers who deal in methamphetamine and marijuana bring some of the cocaine into the state of Oklahoma. Some is converted into crack cocaine and is sold at retail prices. Most of the cocaine that is purchased in the Oklahoma City area is brought in by local suppliers who travel to South Texas and Mexico and return to dispense or distribute the product.

Black tar heroin is a type of heroin that is produced mostly in Mexico. This type of heroin is obtainable in limited quantities near the metropolitan areas in Oklahoma. Brown or Colombian white heroin is rare to find. In recent years, the demand for heroin has declined. Most of the heroin that is brought into Oklahoma is hidden and concealed in passenger vehicles.

The number one drug of choice in Oklahoma is primarily methamphetamine that comes from Mexico. Crystal meth which is the solid form of methamphetamine is becoming more prevalent. Most of the methamphetamine in the state is brought in by motor vehicles. Hispanic organizations are responsible for the meth that’s being transported in. There has been a decline in the mom and pop labs in the last two years. This has a lot to do with the laws that were passed in mid-2004 that refer to Pseudoephedrine.

Most of the MDMA (this is also called ecstasy on the streets and is a synthetic mind altering drug with hallucinogenic and amphetamine-like properties), in Oklahoma comes from the West Coast, Texas, and Nevada. A small number of seizures (apprehensions) have involved MDMA originating in Canada.

Hydrocodone products are the most popular pharmaceutical substances that are abused. Oxycodone products is also abused and diverted often. Methadone abuse is on the rise in Oklahoma. Some of the ways these substances are obtained is through unscrupulous pharmacists, passing fraudulent prescriptions, doctor shopping hospital thefts and pharmacy break-ins.

There are currently twenty two drug courts operating in the state of Oklahoma with eleven more in the planning stages (documented in 2008).
