Ecstasy Abuse and GHB Recovery

Ecstasy Abuse and GHB Recovery

There are quite a few different substances in the world, some illicit and some not, that can be abused by people. Some drugs are commonly thought of when you think of drug abuse, such as marijuana and cocaine, but there are many other substances out there that people are using and abusing and potentially causing a whole lot of harm with over time. Two such examples of substances that are readily abused are ecstasy and GHB.

What is Ecstasy

Ecstacy is also known as MDMA and is an illegal drug that is taken orally as either a capsule or tablet. The drug is both a stimulant and a hallucinogen, which provides the user with an energized feeling as well as distorting time and perception. The average dose is generally considered to be one or two tablets which contain between 60-120 milligrams of MDMA each and the effects last for between 3-6 hours. MDMA can interfere with the body's ability to regulate its internal temperature which can lead to severe medical consequences up to and including death.

What is GHB

GHB works to depress the central nervous system. It is odorless and colorless with a salty flavor and can be produced as a clear liquid, white powder or tablet/capsule form. Due to its properties it is easy to slip into a drink undetected. It can be produced in non-lab environments using ingredients like solvents and commercial cleaners. Body builders have used this drug to increase muscle growth, it is used as a recreational drug and occasionally as a date rape drug. The effects of GHB abuse include: slurred speech, amnesia, hallucinations, difficulty thinking, and at higher doses coma or death.

Addiction to Ecstasy and GHB

Both ecstasy and GHB are drugs that are used casually and recreationally. For many people, an addiction never occurs because the drugs are only used on an occasional basis rather than on a more consistent or constant basis. The truth that you need to know about these drugs, however, is that you can definitely achieve an addiction or a physical dependency on them just as with any other type of drug. The problem with this type of drug is that when you continue to use it over time, you develop what is known as a tolerance.

What a tolerance entails is that with consistent use, your body acts as if you require more and more of the drug in order to achieve the same effects that you once achieved. Where as you only need to take a certain amount at first, you will eventually need to take double or triple that original amount in order to achieve the same feelings. As people respond to the physical tolerance, they take more and more of the drug until the point where they are physically addicted.

The body responds in interesting ways to drug use, and ecstasy and GHB are no exception to the rule. When you become addicted to Ecstasy and GHB on a physical or mental level, the only solution is going to be to get true professional help. Help comes in many forms. The best type of help is a physical detox followed by an inpatient drug rehab program that will help you work on overcoming the addiction and whatever led to the addiction in the first place.

Getting Help for Ecstasy Abuse and GHB Abuse

If you are addicted to either ecstasy or GHB, or if you are abusing either of these substances and want to get help before the problem is exacerbated, rest assured that there is help out there for you. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to find a drug rehab facility that provides treatment programs for these specific types of drugs. A drug rehab facility that offers specialization in one of these drugs is essentially going to provide you with the best possible chance of overcoming the substance abuse problem so that you can move on with your life.

A drug rehab facility is first going to provide you with detox, which is the physical part of the addiction. It will help you get the drug out of your system so that you can get sober again. The second part of the drug rehab program is going to be recovery and rehabilitation, which entails developing healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle where drugs no longer impact you. Combining these two types of recovery are essential in guaranteeing that a relapse does not occur in the future.

For those addicted to GHB, they need to know that it is difficult to find a facility knowledgeable and equipped to do a GHB detox. It should be a medical detox, not cold turkey. It is most like alcohol or benzos but can be even more prolonged (10-14 days for actual detox). Most facilities do NOT know this drug and will keep them for three days and send them out the door. Days 4-6 are typically the most crucial. At day 3 people can seem coherent but in fact will not remember those days. But do not give up. Seek and demand a proper medical detox from this drug and be prepared to engage in rehab, inpatient or at least outpatient, as that is crucial to avoiding relapse. It's well worth the battle to break free of this nasty drug.
