Binge Drinking:
According to a rent study conducted by Kathryn Graham, et al of the University of Western Ontario psychology department "Depression is most strongly related to a pattern of binge drinking," Binge Drinking is defined in the study as consuming at least 5 alcoholic beverages at one sitting. Whether Binge Drinking resulted in the development depression or whether depression contributed to a persons binge drinking was unclear in this study.
Addiction
Addiction implies that a drug dependency has developed to such an extent that it has serious detrimental effects on the user (referred to as an addict). They may be chronically intoxicated, have great difficulty stopping the drug use, and be determined to obtain the drug by almost any means. The term addiction is inextricably linked to society's reaction to the user, and so medical experts try to avoid using it, preferring dependence instead.

Addiction Counseling - What You Need To Know

Anyone who has an addiction problem should be aware of and should seriously consider attending addiction counseling.  This is something that could turn a person’s life around.  Addiction counseling can help them have a deeper understanding of the reasons behind their addictions, figure out ways to handle issues that lead to their problems, and live clean and sober lives.

At what point in a person’s life should he seek addiction counseling?  These are some of the signs that should induce someone to seek counseling:

  • When he/she cannot put a stop to his addiction on his own
  • When he/she needs to take a substance so he can through the day or because he feels that he cannot live without it
  • When he/she has hurt himself, or people around him, or is thinking about hurting himself or others
  • When he/she has been fired or lost time at work because of his addictions
  • When he/she cannot perform the normal functions he used to perform

Drug rehabilitation programs usually offer addiction counseling aside from the medical treatment that they provide.

It is important to remember that addiction counseling can help you in all areas of your life that addiction has touched.  It will aid you in evaluating what led you to the addiction in the first place; and will help you find ways how not to let these issues or situations drive you into using the substance again.  Furthermore, addiction counseling also gives out information about drug use and educates you on how to handle issues in your life without resorting to drugs or alcohol.

Addiction counseling is also vital in avoiding chronic relapse, which is something that haunts people going through addiction treatment.  Some people, after being clean and sober after treatment, find themselves once again integrated into the society and dealing with situations and issues that led them to their problem.  Without counseling and a support group, they feel vulnerable and eventually fall into the same addiction.

Counseling makes you stronger and will arm you with the necessary tools to fight addiction and live a drug or alcohol – free life.  You might think that addiction counseling is just an “extra” in a drug rehabilitation program.  The fact is it is something that lies at the root of every rehabilitation program and can be the most important part of you getting better.  Take advantage of addiction counseling programs and help speed your recovery.  It will be the best decision you may ever have made and the result is something you can definitely live with.
