Be Aware of Spiked Drinks and Keep Yourself and Your Teens SAFE

The holiday season of 2011 is just beginning with Thanksgiving behind us now and Christmas less than a month away. We all look forward to Christmas parties and get-togethers which many times include people we don't know or in settings that take place in bars or clubs.

It's important to remember that today no one can be too careful when it comes to drinking alcoholic or any other beverage when you're attending parties, in a club or bar setting. It's very easy for a person to slip something into your drink without your knowledge with the intent of just 'messing you up' or taking sexual advantage of you.

This is definitely nothing most of us, which includes both men and women, think about when we're enjoying ourselves with friends or attending nightclubs, concerts, or enjoying a casual drink at the bar. Unfortunately though it's a reality today and we need to be aware that spiking a person's drink for sexual purposes or just to mess a person up is very common and many people end up in the emergency room later or have actually died as a result.

I found great tips from Medline Plus which will hopefully keep you safe not just during the holidays but whenever you are out enjoying yourself or even having people in your own home that you don't really know very well. It's not that times have changed, I'm sure spiking drinks has taken place for a very long time but it does seem to be more prevalent today than probably years ago.

  1. Be careful and smart, don't accept a drink from someone you don't know and trust
  2. If the drink comes in a bottle or can, open it yourself
  3. Make sure you keep an eye on your drink and never leave it out of your sight
  4. If you begin to feel funny and not yourself but you're not intoxicated get help ASAP
  5. Being with friends or someone you know and trust that's not drinking can also help if they're keeping an eye on you and your drink.

Never think this just happens to others and it could never happen to you, people will spike drinks during social gatherings that take place in concerts, parties, night clubs, and in bars for reasons that include:

  • Sexual intent
  • Robbery
  • Assault
  • Just to see you get 'messed up'

It doesn't matter your age or gender when it comes to spiking drinks no matter what the reason is behind this horrible and sick behavior. We need to just accept the fact today that drugs no matter if they're legal or illegal street drugs are easy to come by and there are people out there in all age groups that seek out innocent victims by spiking their drinks in order to carry out their sick and twisted behavior.
