Many recent studies have revealed that moderate drinking may bring health benefits, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that it is never a good idea to simply jump on a new health trend.
It may be too soon for you to begin drinking with good health and wellness in mind.
Understanding Alcohol the Studies
Studies in the past decade have indicated that having a moderate amount of alcohol, typically in the form of a glass of wine or two per day, can lower the risk of developing more than 20 different health problems. Some examples of these health conditions are rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and even the common cold.
Despite what these studies are suggesting, this is not reason enough to turn to alcohol for its purported health benefits. This is largely because many of these studies were observational in nature, meaning that associations exist between health outcomes and lifestyle choices, but there is no concrete proof that one can cause the other. This is according to Dr. Richard Saitz who is the editor for Evidence-Based Medicine and professor at Boston University's Schools of Medicine and Public Health.
Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices
People who drink alcohol in low risk quantities are also more likely to make healthy lifestyle choices on a regular basis, such as having their teeth checked annually by a dentist, acquiring a yearly physical, exercising regularly and undergoing screenings for cancers and other diseases. These people who have healthy relationships with their bodies tend to moderate their alcohol consumption to the point where they reap health benefits without consequences.
What is known at this point is that these studies show people who are already drinking moderate levels of alcohol may be reaping some health benefits. People who do not currently drink low or moderate levels of alcohol, however, should not suddenly pick up a drinking habit because they see some potential health benefit. There are other, better ways to develop a healthy lifestyle without turning to a substance like alcohol.
What Alcohol Studies are Suggesting
What these studies are now suggesting is that if you are already drinking alcohol on a regular or fairly regular basis, then you may be giving yourself some health benefits. If you are drinking more heavily than this, it would be wise to step back your consummation of alcohol at the very least. There have been no studies to suggest that heavy drinking brings health benefits, after all. None of these studies suggest that you should begin drinking in order to realize health benefits. There are better, safer ways to lead a healthier life than to begin drinking if you do not already have a relationship with alcohol.
A causal relationship with alcohol is not typically a dangerous one. As studies are showing, moderate alcohol consumption can have a neutral or slightly positive effect on health over time, and may even help to reduce the risk of developing certain life threatening health conditions over time. People who are struggling with their alcohol consumption, however, need to seek assistance where they can find it. The right alcohol rehabilitation program can mean all the difference in reaching a healthy level of alcohol use, even if this means cutting alcohol out altogether. Seek treatment for substance abuse or alcohol addiction before the problem becomes even more difficult to control.
