How Stress Management Programs Can Help Prevent Substance Abuse

There are a lot of different causes for substance abuse problems. It ultimately depends on the individual person and what they are going through in life to determine what is going to ultimately lead to a substance abuse problem. Some people, for example, have great difficulty when it comes to managing stress. When life becomes stressful for them in any manner, they find themselves desperately trying to find ways to cope.

Methods of coping, also known as coping mechanisms, come in many different forms. Drug abuse and substance abuse problems are an example of a bad coping mechanism, one that ultimately causes more harm than good.

People often begin taking a substance in an abusive manner innocently enough. They want to feel less stress or anxiety, and so they take or try a substance to numb their pain or deal with the other emotions that are impacting them. An example of this is alcohol. People try a drink to calm their nerves or enjoy their evening, but then they end up drinking more and more over time as a means of self medication. People who self medicate using alcohol almost always eventually become alcoholics because their dependence on the substance grows and grows until they have no choice anymore.

  1. Self medication using alcohol may seem like a good idea at first, but it is only going to become increasingly harmful over time, until the point where you are drinking yourself to death. People who fall prey to alcoholism through self medication struggle with the problem, and rather than repairing the stress it was meant to remedy, this problem actually causes more stress and more problems over time.

  2. Alcohol is a depressant, so while people drink it expecting to feel better, it can actually make things a lot worse sooner than it makes them better. So you may begin drinking in the evening because you think it is going to help your mood, pick you up or simply make you feel better, but as the alcohol gets into your system it is going to cause more harm than good. You will end up feeling more stressed or more depressed, which in turn is going to lead you to want more alcohol.

Stress Management Programs

Substance abuse is not a coping mechanism that works. The truth is, however, that there are plenty of coping mechanisms that do work and do get results. The key is going to be to find a coping strategy that helps you recover from what ails you rather than driving you deeper into the stress, the depression and the anxiety that has caused problems for you in the first place. One of these coping mechanisms that you should explore is stress management programs.

The reason why this works is because dealing with the underlying cause of the substance abuse is a vitally essential part of overcoming the substance abuse itself. If you are stressed, depressed or anxious, then you are going to continue to turn to substance abuse such as alcoholism as a cure even though it is never actually going to cure you.

The best thing that you can do is to look around at the different forms of stress resolution and stress management programs that are out there so that you can find a good fit for you and your individual issues. When you find a stress management program that is actually going to address the types of stress that you are dealing with, then that is when you can really, truly begin to get the help that you need for the ailments that are causing your substance abuse problem in the first place.

It can take a little bit of time to find the right stress management program, but the effort that you put into the process is going to have a profoundly positive impact on your ability to overcome this problem. A willingness to seek help is going to go a very long way in allowing you to kick the substance abuse problem as well as the underlying cause, whether it is stress or depression or something else entirely that brought you to this place. The right drug rehabilitation program is going to provide you with the stress management that you need to overcome your addiction and what caused it in the first place, and tackling both problems is going to be absolutely essential in your recovery not only now but in the future as well.

The thing for me is I know all of this, and yet I still allow my emotions to dictate my actions!!! I am a sucker for my so called family and they bring me down that much further!!! I have a lot of wasted talent, I miss my woman, no one trusts me, and I am not the only one with these feelings. Yet I am alone in these struggles because it is me that I'm struggling with!!!
