What Is Cymbalta?

Cymbalta (Duloxetine) is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor used as a treatment for major depressive disorder, and general anxiety disorder. These types of drugs are believed to work by affecting the noradrenergic and serotonergic activity within the central nervous system through manipulating the activity of serotonin and norepinephrine within the brain. Dosage ranges between 60 and 120 mg daily, with 60mg being the standard maintenance dosage.

The main use of Cymbalta is in the treatment of depression and anxiety, but there have been a good number of other uses that have been found. It has been used to treat pain from Fibromyalgia, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and general pain found in the bones and muscles. There has been some testing on the drug that finds it has some effect on stress urinary incontinence. Cymbalta is taken as an oral caplet that must be swallowed whole and it should not be crushed up or administered in any other manner other than how it is prescribed.

Cymbalta Abuse

In many ways Cymbalta is looked upon as the next Prozac, a heavily prescribed medication that is capable of being abused if you are not careful. People who use the medication in the way that it was prescribed to them are not abusing it, but unfortunately there are people that use Cymbalta in a manner that goes against how it was prescribed. For example, some people take more Cymbalta than they are supposed to, either by upping their own dosage or by taking dosages more often than they were directed to. Another way that people abuse Cymbalta is by taking it for a longer period of time than they are supposed to, which can lead to a greater physical dependency over time.

People who take Cymbalta recreationally are abusing the drug, especially when they acquire it illicitly on the street and use it in a manner that goes against how it is typically prescribed. For example, many people crush the Cymbalta tablets into a powder that they then attempt to snort through the nose. Other people may dissolve this fine powder into a liquid such as water and then attempt to inject it into the blood stream in order to experience its effects more quickly. Unfortunately, taking Cymbalta in this manner can be quite hazardous to your health and should never be attempted under any circumstances because the medication is simply not meant to be taken like this.
