What is Oxycontin?

Oxycontin is one of the trade names for a narcotic drug that is known as Oxycodone Hydrochloride. This is a type of painkiller that is available with a physician's prescription in the United States.

The first thing that you need to understand about Oxycontin is the fact that it is a legitimate medication, and so it is prescribed daily to many different people around the world for legitimate purposes.

For example, a physician may prescribe Oxycontin to you to deal with pain after an operation. The drug Oxycontin is typically prescribed for the relief of moderate pain and severe pain resulting from a number of different causes including:

  • Bursitis
  • Injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Neuralgia
  • Cancer

The problem is that there is a potential for abuse with this drug that many people are not initially aware of, and this drives them to use it in off-label manners, which leads to abuse and the eventuality of addiction.

Oxycontin is a small tablet, but it is available in several different colors. It comes in several different dosages including a 10 milligram dosage, a 20 mg dosage, a 40 mg dosage and an 80 mg dosage, all in tablet forms. Each of these tablets is imprinted with the milligram dosage amount on one side of the tablet, and "OC" printed on the other side.

How Is This Oxycontin Abused?

There are two basic ways that this medication is abused. The first way is that someone will begin taking it for a legitimate reason, such as to treat pain, and then they will stop using it in the manner in which it was prescribed over time. They may start altering their dosage over time because they do not feel like they are getting the same effects as they were in the past, for example, or they may begin to alter their dosage because they appreciate the other effects that come with the drug. Oxycontin is especially well known for producing a sort of euphoric effect, one that is similar to the effect created by the illicit drug known as Heroin. In other words, many patients begin to abuse this drug because it is a legal way to get a high similar to taking an illegal drug.

The second group of people who abuse Oxycontin do so completely illicitly. They purchase this drug on the street completely for recreational and illicit purposes meaning that they never had a prescription and do not have a legitimate reason to have a prescription. Oxycontin is an expensive drug to acquire on the street, but this does not stop most people from finding a way to get it and use it.
